Hi!
My name is Cerys Baker, I’m a 20-year-old theatre maker and aspiring director, in my third year of studying Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths University of London. As I am about to embark upon my career as a creative in this industry, my placement at Boundless has been invaluable at this early stage of my career. I was drawn to Boundless as their work appeals to my own passions on the importance of engaging young people in theatre, as well as being experimental and fresh.
Upon joining the team for 3 months, my main aim was to learn as much as possible about the Boundless process of creating a show from script development to marketing to budgeting.
So far, working with the Boundless team has enabled me to gain a wide range of experience in areas of which I had no previous experience in, allowing me to become more confident in not only my own capabilities but also working in a professional environment.
Excitingly, as Boundless’ first university placement student, I have had the opportunity to be a part of their many upcoming projects. The Extended Universe project; I have been able to sit in on the creative and marketing sessions with our European partners. This experience has been eye opening in terms of how a project of such magnitude comes together, and it has been a busy yet enjoyable time for me as a young creative to be involved in a thriving environment. I also had the pleasure of spectating the R&D for all 4 Extended Universe pieces; something that I have not had the opportunity to be part of before.
So far, I have become familiar with the processes behind marketing and branding a show and a theatre company such as Boundless. This includes brainstorming social media posts and advertisement, reviewing website content and promoting our work to local schools and youth organisations. Alongside this, I have been given my own projects to lead, focusing on reaching out to young people across the local community, which is proving to be a really exciting project!
The team here at Boundless have been extremely supportive in helping me to achieve my personal goals for this placement. Working as part of an intimate team has enabled the facilitation to learn the process of script development, given me tasks towards their own marketing projects that will be of use to me as a freelancing director and producer.
I feel aligned with Boundless’ ideals and mission to inspire the youth of today to push boundaries, produce stimulating content and workshops to create dialogue on politics, society and art; and most importantly to be fearless in your expression.
As a young adult, Boundless feels like the right organisation in which to be developing my own identity as a creative. In a time where young people are often isolated or lack encouragement to engage in the arts, the work being done by Boundless is shaking up expectations of what is out there for young people. Being in a space where creative decisions are being made daily, as well as observing and being given tasks that actually benefit my learning experience. I am now in my final week here and I am really looking forward to seeing what else is in store for the remainder of my time here!
