90’s Makeup Tutorials

9 April 2018

We Are Boundless

Alice, our 16 year old makeup expert, brings back the 90s with two makeup tutorials…

In the 90’s there were two main styles of makeup: 90’s grunge and 90’s natural. 90’s grunge style features strong dark eyes and lips and it is slowly making its way back into the makeup world thanks to celebrities such as Lorde and Kristen Stewart. 90’s natural-style makeup was seen in TV shows like Friends and in movies like Clueless and was all about enhancing natural features and was bright and dewy.
There were also iconic 90’s makeup trends such as frosted blue eyeshadow, frosted lip stick and glitter on the eyes, made popular by the Spice Girls and Britney Spears. We can also never forget the over tweezed 90’s brows that made all of these styles truly 90’s.

“The play Confidence by Judy Upton is set in the 1990s and, since I love makeup, I decided to share two simple tutorials to help you recreate that decade’s looks and achieve #boundlessconfidence”

Grunge Makeup - Unknown

Step 1– Start with a matte pore minimising primer to prep your skin and create a flawless base, I always apply primer with my hands so my natural body heat can warm up the product.

Step 2– Then use a matte foundation all over your face to even out your skin tone and go over any flaws, use a sponge or a dense brush for the best results.

Step 3 Apply a concealer that is one shade lighter than your natural skin tone to your under eyes, chin, the centre of your forehead and down the bridge of your nose to highlight and cover any imperfections and blend with a sponge or brush.

Step 4– Set everything with a loose translucent powder on a slightly damp sponge and wipe away excess with a big fluffy brush.

Step 5- Next for brows fill them in and keep them thin for this look I would use a powder for the most 90’s effect on an angled brush and if needed go around them with concealer on a flat concealer brush to sharpen.

Step 6- Now it’s time for eyes. 90’s grunge makeup had a huge focus on dark defined smoky eyes. Use an eye primer to guarantee long lasting eyeshadow and a smooth application. Set this with a translucent or white powder and begin on the shadow.

Step 7- Curl your lashes and add mascara creating a 90’s spidery super separated lash look.

Step 8- For the cheeks use a cool toned contour very lightly, contouring in the 90’s wasn’t like the Kim Kardashian contouring we do now, people kept their contour more natural and light.

Step 9- Then add a peachy blush, this isn’t essential lots of 90’s grunge looks didn’t have blush. Highlight is a major makeup craze now but wasn’t really essential back in the 90’s when they were all about matte makeup looks so skip highlighting.

Step 10- The last step and possible most iconic to the grunge look is a dark berry or burgundy lip create a 90’s pout. Set with setting spray to last all day and now you have a 90’s style grunge makeup look.

Clueless - 1995

Step 1- To start a 90’s natural makeup look have clean well moisturised skin. Use a tinted moisturiser or bb cream if needed for some added coverage and apply sparingly with your hands or if that isn’t needed skip this step for an even more natural look.

Step 2- Next apply a small amount of concealer over any blemishes and under the eyes to get a natural but flawless base.

Step 3- Set with powder where needed if you get oily throughout the day or to set your under-eyes to stop creasing but if it is not needed keep the makeup dewy and light by not powdering.

Step 4- Apply a shimmery cream eyeshadow to the lids with your fingers, choose one that is a fairly light champagne shade, pink or for true 90’s a frosted blue.

Step 5- Apply a cream blush to add colour into the cheeks and a cream highlight for an added natural glow using your hands to melt the product into your skin.

Step 6- Then use clear mascara on your lashes and through your eyebrows to add shape.

Step 7– Use a white eyeliner in the waterline to open up your eyes for a doll like appearance.

Step 8- Lastly apply clear lip gloss or a frosted lipstick for an iconic 90’s style lip. Set makeup with setting spray and finally you have a natural style 90’s makeup look.

My name is Alice, I am a 16-year-old, year 12 Theatre student at the BRIT School of Performing Arts and Technology. I wanted to do work experience with Boundless to learn how theatre companies are ran because this is something I would love to do in the future.
Along with theatre and acting a huge hobby of mine is makeup. I’ve always tried to copy my older sister and about a year ago my passion grew massively when I bought myself an SFX – special effects – starter kit and started teaching myself how to do SFX and body painting along with beauty makeup. I am now doing a makeup BTEC at school alongside my theatre course and have opened a MUA Instagram account, @alicedmua, where I post my work. One day I would love to travel the world to pursue my passion for acting and makeup.

Even though I wasn’t born in the 90’s, it was still the age of one of my all-time favourite TV shows F.R.I.E.N.D.S and two of my favourite movies, Pretty Woman and Clueless. I love how bold and outgoing the fashion and makeup was.
