Safe

13-15th November 2025

SAFE premiered in November 2025, and was co-Produced by The Customs House and Boundless Theatre.

Written and Directed by Liv Fowler, in collaboration with Young People from South Tyneside Youth Service.

Billy and Georgie live with their Dad, Mike. Mike doesn’t leave the house anymore. Georgie is finishing her GCSE’s while caring for the family and Billy is…Billy. When his friend Stacey asks to cash in her favour, Billy leaves himself in a position where he has to do something that can risk his future and his life at home.

“Listening to young people isn’t just important, it is essential to building safer, stronger communities for everyone. SAFE, the new production at The Customs House, is a powerful reminder of that. I was delighted to attend the play, which shines a light on real experiences of young people in South Tyneside, including the vulnerabilities they have identified themselves from everyday pressures to factors that shape their sense of safety and belonging.

What makes SAFE so impactful is the way it was created. The Customs House, Boundless Theatre, and South Tyneside Youth Service have built a space where young people can speak openly about their lives, and their voices directly shaped the final performance.

This is exactly the kind of approach that builds trust, strengthens relationships, and ensures that our decisions around community safety trule reflect the voices of young people.

– Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Susan Dungworth, upon watching the show.
