70% of the theatre industry needs to be heard: why we’re supporting a #freelancetaskforce

Boundless Theatre is proud to be a signatory of this open letter to theatre and performance makers, alongside many other theatre, performance companies and venues across the UK.

Today, on the 21st May 2020 we have lent our support to an industry wide #freelancetaskforce to make sure that the 70% of our industry made up of freelancers and the self-employed are represented in the search for solutions in the Covid-19 crisis.

We work with a great number of freelancers and self employed workers at Boundless, not just artists and performance makers but producers, graphic designers, video editors and even our Finance Manager.  Some of these workers are just starting out and others have been working for a number of years. All are newly vulnerable as Covid-19 and the ensuring economic crisis ravages our industry.

We cannot wait or watch as a whole generation of theatre makers and those with established careers are both left outside of the much needed lobbying for wide reaching support. This support will be hard won and is coming at a time when the full impact of this crisis is being felt by many.  However, without hearing from the many, the solutions will not be found.

We are standing with many other producing companies and theatres from the very large to the very small to pay a 15-25 year old freelancer or self employed worker to participate in a Freelance Task Force.  This group will work 1 day a week for 3 months from June and will report in to other groups and wider conversations that extend through to those feeding directly in to The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS)

Boundless is a small organisation and yet the whole team, our advisory group and the board are fully committed to doing everything in our power to ensure the resilience of the people that make this industry great.  Our shared culture is given life by the many individuals who are struggling to stay afloat, care for their families and imagine a future that sees them continue to work.

We cannot just let this happen and much will be needed for many months and years to come.  We also need to start somewhere and so for now this is our attempt to be the change we want to see.  We will be announcing our member of the task force early next week and they will in turn share with us what more can be done as a direct result of the work of the task force.  I look forward to sharing that with you all and acting upon all of the recommendations we can.
