Learning Resources Opinions

Boundless Artistic Director Rob Drummer has contributed to a new book The Student Guide to Writing: Playwriting which is published by Oberon Books. The book, edited by Jennifer Tuckett, Course Leader, MA Dramatic Writing at Central Saint Martins, provides access to step-by-step lesson plans for writing a play, with contributions by ten top industry professionals who have led the way in terms of playwriting training in the UK.

Suitable for writers, students, teachers, the industry and anyone with an interest in dramatic writing and playwriting, the book offers key advice on getting started, ideas, structure, scenes, characterisation, dialogue, theatricality, rewriting, and the business of staging your work.

On 9 May a panel discussion took place at The Bush Theatre to launch the book with speakers Rob Drummer, Bush Theatre Associate Dramaturg Stewart Pringle, Oberon Books Senior Commissioning Editor George Spender and chaired by the book’s editor Jennifer Tuckett. Read more about this event in a piece by The Stage.

We think the book is a great introduction to writing for theatre and is an indispensable guide to playwriting techniques with easy to follow exercises.  If you’re considering writing for theatre and don’t know how to begin then take a look and get writing.
