Boundless Accelerator 2019
Boundless Theatre is committed to discovering the best ideas from artists who might not be known to us and developing the extraordinary artists of the future, now. We are looking for bold, imaginative work for 15–25 year olds that aims to start a conversation with the world from diverse perspectives. We also champion work in translation and seek to commission bold and innovative new theatre that is relevant, contemporary and ambitious for young adult audiences.
Boundless Accelerator is our way of supporting artists, from developing ideas through to artist support and talent development. Accelerator is a pipeline that we hope delivers new work to challenge and spark conversations with our audiences.
The 2019 Accelerator Artists
We offered four UK artists (or groups of artists) a bursary of £2500 each to develop new ideas for work that is co-created with young adults around the theme of mental health and emotional wellbeing. The 2019 Boundless Accelerator artists were, Natalya Martin, Nouveau Riche, Produced Moon & Ryan Gilmartin and James Monaghan. You can read more about them further down the page and read about their projects in the ideas posts at the bottom of the page.
The project culminated in a sharing at Science Gallery London in December 2019 where all of the artists shared the outcomes of their work. We made a short documentary about the sharing which you can watch below.
The 2019 Theme
Mental health and emotional wellbeing
Mind, the mental health charity, define ‘mental wellbeing’ as your mental state – how you are feeling and how well you can cope with day-to-day life. Mental wellbeing is dynamic. It can change from moment to moment, day to day, month to month or year to year.
Headlines around young people’s mental health, from the chronic underfunding of mental health services, tabloid stories about ‘snowflakes’ and the impact of social media, are in our newsfeeds every day. In this context, Boundless want to creatively explore how issues around mental health and emotional wellbeing affect the lives of teenagers and young adults today.
Natalya Martin is an actor, multi-sensory practitioner and theatre-maker. Her goal is to make work that is fully accessible, relatable and of quality, for and with people with disabilities. She is the co-founder of theatre company FEEL Theatre, which specialises in creating sensory stories, shows and experiences.
Winners of the 2018 Edinburgh Stage Award and The Untapped Award, Nouveau Riché is a multi – disciplinary arts production company. Previous theatre credits include Queens of Sheba, Chateau Marmont and Book of Actions. Their objective is to discover, nurture and produce unique stories that are culturally inclusive, with a keen scope on work that is both educational and entertaining.
Produced Moon are an interactive, digital theatre company working at the intersection of theatre and gaming, based between London and Glasgow. Recent work includes Switchboard, The Inventors Squad and Electric.
Ryan Gilmartin is a multi-disciplinary actor, theatre maker and video DJ. He has made work for the National Theatre, Royal Exchange Theatre and Sheffield Theatres.
