Our Associate Artist scheme, now in its tenth year provides much needed ongoing support to playwrights, directors, designers and theatre makers who want to make extraordinary theatre for our audiences. Through structured mentoring, access to R&D resources and positive encouragement to make new work, we hope to make a positive impact on the broader theatre community in the UK.

Stewart is a writer, director and dramaturg. Having worked in the education sector for many years, he has a particular interest in theatre for young audiences, and frequently facilitates writing and performance projects for children, young people and their families.
His commissions include an adaptation of Dave Shelton’s award-winning novel ‘A Boy and a Bear in a Boat’ (The Spark Arts for Children), ‘Where There’s A Will’ (Bath Spa University/The Egg), an adaptation of Stan Sakai’s cult graphic novel series ‘Usagi Yojimbo’ (Southwark Playhouse); and ‘Seesaw’, an original play for under 5s (Unicorn).
His dramaturgy work includes Ilya Khrzhanovskiy’s multi-platform film and television project ‘DAU; The Eyes Have It’, a devised site-specific adventure for Bread & Goose and Watford Palace Theatre; and Christopher ‘Marlowe’s’ Tamburlaine for Yellow Earth.
He was a JMK Young Directors Award finalist in 2011 and has staged his scripts shrapnel at the University of Northampton, ‘Imagine You Are Everyone’ at the Yard, and his own all-female adaptation of ‘Othello’ at the Space.
Stewart is currently writing a new script for Unicorn and developing projects with Mull Theatre and the RSC.
Mia Theil Have is the founder and Artistic Director of Riotous Company.
She was in the core ensemble at Odin Teatret from 2003–07, performing in four productions directed by Eugenio Barba, including the role of Ophelia in ‘Ur-Hamlet’ at Elsinore Castle in 2006. As a theatre director, Mia’s credits include: ‘Penelope X’ (Macedonia), ‘Sarha’ (Portugal & Palestine), ‘Bodas de Sangre’ (Cuba), ‘Carnival over the Rainbow and Feast Kakhulu’ (South Africa), ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ (Kathmandu & Delhi), ‘White Suit’ (GDIF 2012 Greenwich Festival), ‘The Third Man’ (Secret Cinema) and ‘Divertimento for rope and strings’ (Tete a Tete Festival). Mia directed the RPS Award-winning ‘We are Shadows’ for Spitalﬁelds Music Festival, a hugely ambitious production rehearsed over 18 months and performed by 300 residents of Tower Hamlets.
Mia worked as an associate director on ‘Dalston Songs and Singing Circle’ (ROH), ‘Kafka’s Monkey’ (Young Vic & international tour), ‘The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui’ (Liverpool Playhouse), ‘Romeo & Juliet’ (HOME) and Told by an Idiot’s ‘My Perfect Mind’ (Young Vic & international tour). Creating a bridge between new Danish drama and the UK, Mia has translated ‘Sandholm’ by Anna Bro into English, directing it for the Unicorn Theatre, as well as initiating a festival of new Danish writing at the Danish Embassy in London in 2015, for which she translated Thomas Howalt’s award-winning play, ‘Hemmeligheden’ (The Secret).
As an actor Mia recently created and performed in Riotous Company productions ‘Scherzo for piano and stick, Insomnia a pas de deux drama for two girls and a piano man’, and was acting for Katie Mitchell this summer in Aix en Provence Festival, as Melisande Double to Barbara Hannigan.
She is currently creating and performing Riotous Company’s Out Of Blixen directed by Kathryn Hunter.
Kate is a director with a background in new plays, interactive and devised theatre.
From 2013 she has been part of the team on METIS’ ‘World Factory’ (Young Vic/New Wolsey 2015, tour 2016), as Co-Writer and Associate Director. She has directed three shows for nationwide tours with Frozen Light, who create multi-sensory work for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities.
Other directing includes: ‘Beauty and the Beast, Monster in the Hall’ (GLYPT), ‘The Future is Boring’ (CPT), ‘Something Else’ (Ovalhouse), ‘Respect’ (ALRA), ‘The Wake’ (Theatre in the Mill), ‘Pellegrino’s Amazing Lobotomat’ (Bush Bazaar, the Bush), ‘1912’ (Sugarhouse Studios), Africker (Hoxton Hall), ‘Pathological’ (Etcetera Theatre), ‘Anatomy Act’ (Edinburgh Fringe) and ‘The Jetsam’ (CPT).
Assisting/ associate work includes: ‘Travesties’ (Menier Chocolate Factory/Apollo), ‘Minefield’ (LIFT/ Royal Court), ‘Trojan Women’ (Gate) and ‘Tell them that I am young and beautiful’ (Arcola).
She trained with Philippe Gaulier, is a Creative Associate at the Gate Theatre, member of Out of the Wings translation collective at Kings College, and has twice been a finalist in the JMK Award.
Sarah is a practitioner based in the North, with a particular interest in devising and physical theatre. Dabbling in multiple production roles, her work has been varied, and within both formal, community and education settings, backstage, on-stage and outdoors.
She trained in Writing, Directing & Performance at The University of York, and since then her theatre credits include; ‘Womberang’ (Upstart Theatre), ‘Clocking In’ (Pilot Theatre), ‘The Beggars of York’ (Tiny Window), ‘Blood & Chocolate’ (Slung Low), ‘Aladdin’ (Three Bears Productions), ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and Frankenstein’ (Theatre Mill), with movement direction on ‘The Maids’ (Hedgepig Theatre), and ‘Henry V’ (York Shakespeare Project).
Having joined site-specific company Theatre Mill from their Young Directors Scheme on ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, she became their full time assistant producer working on John Godber’s ‘Moby Dick’ and the return of the acclaimed ‘Witness For The Prosecution’ at York Guildhall Council Chambers and Leeds Civic Hall.
Sarah has developed an exciting new concept, ‘Moving Music’, looking at the parallels between the devising and improvisation process, trialled at Leeds College of Music with Cellist Alfia Nakipbekova. Recently her capacity for practical roles has seen her undertake project manager roles for Hull 2017’s Flood (Slung Low) and become a member of ITV’s Props Department on ‘Emmerdale’.
Sarah is passionate about creating and engaging with material for young people, and has facilitated projects for The Stephen Joseph Theatre, The Lichfield Festival, Flying Cloud, Konflux Theatre in Education, The Mount School, Nottingham & York Theatre Royal Youth Theatre and Oaken Grove Community Centre.
She was delighted to work with Company of Angels on ‘Helver’s Night’ at York Theatre Royal and went on to facilitate the ambitious Creative Critics project for the Yorkshire Festival in 2016, which aims to equip children with the language to contextualise the work they see and make. She is currently one of the schools practitioners with the Bury St Edmunds Festival and Christina Birt Productions.
Steven Bloomer’s plays include ‘Boiling Frogs’, ‘Punch, You Were After Poetry’ and ‘First They Slaughtered the Angels’. He was the first recipient of Theatre Centre’s Adriene Benham award and is a proud associate artist of The Factory theatre company.
Work for Boundless Theatre (formerly Company of Angels) included Holes (Commisioners/Latitude Festival), ‘Virtual Empty Space’ and the translation of ‘Stuttgart. Teheran’.
Steven is the director of the online comedy series, ‘I Gotta Be Me’.
Oystein is a freelance theatre director and writer.

Tara is a director, writer and facilitator and runs The Conker Group. Her most recent work includes ‘My Body Welsh’ (Welsh Tour), ‘Gutted’ (co-produced by HOME Manchester), ‘Five Tins & A Matter of Time’ (The Yard, NOW ’15) and ‘The Consecration of the Bishop’ by Tim Crouch, written for her as part of the Jerwood Young Director’s Programme at The Young Vic. She is a MGC Futures Bursary Award recipient and will be developing new project ‘A Very British Bird Show’ mixing professionals with 16–23 year olds at Pegasus, Oxford, throughout 2017.
She is a Creative Associate at The Gate, a former Resident Artist with Boundless (2015–16), and a supported artist with Farnham Maltings. She began directing in Dublin, where she was the Resident Assistant at the Abbey and trained at RADA.
Among many assistant director credits, she has worked as an Associate Director in the West End (Michael Grandage Company), and directed freelance projects at The Tricycle, The Landor and for Old Vic New Voices.
From 2012–16 she directed and facilitated multiple projects with Boundless, including ‘Nucking Futs’ (GLYPT), ‘The Commissioners’ (directing a play by Alice Birch), Theatre Cafe 2014, Virtual Empty Space, and she was artistic lead on International Theatre Club. Andrea is a theatre and television Director based in London and Los Angeles.
Andrea began her career as Director in Residence at the National Theatre Studio working in new play development with writers including Nick Stafford, Mike Bartlett, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Jonas Hassan Khemeri. In 2013, she was awarded the National Theatre Leverhulme Directing Prize, where she commissioned Duncan Macmillan to adapt ‘Don Juan Comes Back From The War’, which went on to gain 7 Off West End award nominations. In 2015, she became Resident Director at Schauspiel Frankfurt. Her subsequent work has been staged at theatres across Germany, most notably the Schaubьhne and Berliner Festspiele. Andrea is currently Associate Director on the ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ musical.

Andrea received her MFA in Directing from Columbia University with Honours. She is currently part of director development programmes at the BBC, HBO and American Film Institute.
Gareth is an award winning theatre director based in Glasgow but working throughout the UK.
Most recently he held the post of Citizens Theatre Main Stage Director in Residence (2014–16) where his shows included ‘Into That Darkness’, ‘Vanya’, ‘Blackbird’ and a sell-out production of Irvine Welsh’s ‘Trainspotting’ – all of which went onto gain much critical acclaim including 4 & 5 star reviews plus CATS (Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland) nominations for ‘Blackbird’ and ‘Into That Darkness’.
He has directed productions for a range of companies including National Theatre of Scotland, The Traverse, The Tron Theatre, The Arches, Play Pie and a Pint, Macrobert, High Tide Festival Theatre and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He trained in Contemporary Theatre Practice at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He has won several awards including Two Fringe First Awards (2012 for Educating Ronnie & 2015 for A Gamblers Guide To Dying), a Scottish Arts Club Award for ‘best Scottish Festival show’ (2014 for Donald Robertson Is Not A Stand-Up Comedian) and the Arches New Directors award (2011). He is also co-artistic director of new work company Utter alongside Joe Douglas UtterTheatre.co.uk

Ben is a freelance director, and was winner of the Young Vic’s Genesis Award in 2012. He was winner of Compay of Angels Young Angels Award in 2010. He has directed at the Young Vic, for Headlong and at The Gate. He is also joint artistic director of Dead Centre, based in Dublin, who, to date, have made three shows, Chekhov’s First Play, Souvenir and LIPPY. All three shows have toured throughout the world.
